My latest venture into having a go at making anything I am asked for, led to Sir Topam hatt off Thomas tank engine! Now I am thinking of making a few novelties for my possible venture into craft markets as a contrast to the more serious pieces. However, the ones I have made up until now were for grown ups (and I use the term loosely) so the finish was not really important. but, I am a bit concerned about painting and finishing thing that small children will be getting their little 'gobs' round.
I did Sir Topham with acrylic paint and several layers of melamine finish.
Oh, and 'munchkin safe' glue? any ideas? :-k

Chestnut Products acrylic lacquer is classed as "safe for toys" - the aerosol form is very handy for smaller pieces, too :D

I bought the benneton range of paints when I was making toys. al sold as non toxic.

other options, depending on vibrancy of colour .. food colouring ?

Ans Shellac, as a finish, is non toxic too
