Next project is a cheval mirror a bit similar to this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Length-Mirror-Cheval-White-Mahog/dp/B000RXZSG6
It has a brass screw bolt which sits in a brass threaded mount on each side so it swivels. Had a look in the usual places but cannot seem to find any on this side of the Atlantic although there are plenty I found on google in the US. can anyone point me in the right direction please?
Thanks

Whoo-hoo!
I know a bit about this, Mark.

My cheval mirror is one of the best pieces I've ever made. It's not perfect, but it is PDG.

My mounts are very simple. The frame of the mirror is bubinga, which is quite hard and dense, hard enough to take a thread. So I have two finials with an M6 stud glued in, which pass through the stand, an ebony washer and then gets tapped into the frame. It works a treat and not special hardware is required.

If you wanted a "proper" thread in the stand, you could look at the M6 inserts available at screwfix, I believe. But unless you are making it out of something soft, just tap straight in. It's fine.

OK great idea - so did you tap the threads with a normal tap and die set? I like that idea and will try it out next week. Incidentally I think you will find it is your name which is Steve - not mine! Mine is MARK! Thanks again

Sorry, Mark, I'm at the foothills of Middle Age. Don't we have a Gasman Steve here? I'm getting confused, Nurse, Nurse!

Sorry.

Yes, I just tapped straight in.

Steve yes I think there is a Gasman Steve too so no worries.
I was going to make mine oval too - in fact I had seen yours previously and thought what a lovely piece. I was a bit unsure how the grain would turn out - especially which direction one would have the grain going in - did you join together pieces so the long grain 'flows' around the whole oval? I was worried particularly as the circular and oval pieces I have made previously have had movement and opened up gaps. I have opted for a sort of coffin shape - ie long and thin with slightly curved sides and a bulge in the middle. I will post a new WIP when I get going
Thanks again

The mirror is made in three layers, each 6mm. There are several straight sections which overlap; then two layers are glued together; then a template is screwed to the layers and the oval cut and trimmed to the template; then the template is removed and the third layer glued on (covering the screw holes), then that layer is trimmed to the first two. Then the front is veneered with kevasingo. I think I worked out that there were 28 pieces in the complete ring.
