Ive just been given a log of freshly cut cherry, maybe a foot across, 5 foot long. Aside from sealing the ends, any recommendations on what I might do with it? Get it cut into boards at the mill? Not sure how cherry behaves or what its particularly good for other than turning, and I dont have a lathe sadly...

I have had Native Cherry milled in the past and Air dried it without any issues, you need to be prepared for up to 2" of Sap wood either side so the best you should be thinking of is 8" wide boards. I sealed the ends and used 20mm wide sticks at about 20" centres, there was some splicing on the ends of the boards but nothing too serious- very pleased with the end results.

It’s a nice wood for making small boxes, polishes well and ages to a lovely colour.
I’m not sure it would be economically viable to pay to have a log that size sawn for you. Do you have a bandsaw to convert it yourself?
