hello all if like me you have some beech laid up for spalting, don't forget to take a slice of the end of the log every now and then to check on the progress. this log was only just starting to go back in june now its just right for me- spalted but not soft.

if you take the slice of and its still not good yet- just put some shavings over the fresh wood and recover the log under your old sheets etc

Funny you mentioning this George as i have just sorted all the Beech logs out that i got recently, and had noticed that the bottoms are already starting to go black as in your piccy.
They are now all under cover and draped in old curtains etc.
I have put some on slabs and the rest left on the bark chippings, end up,for Spalting i hope [-o< [-o<
I will keep a close eye on it all

Looked like a big problem, but when you took a skim off revealed something quite different and very nice. Doesn't take long to check now and again instead of forgeting then finding that it is just best for fire wood.
