Just a few pics of last weekends mini-project - a lil wooden chamfer plane. The rails are ash, top plate is cocobolo, the whole thing is pinned together with square ebony dowels. The blade I made myself a while back, I annealed an old blunt file, cut it down, hardened and tempered it - far from perfect but for this its just the job.

xy - couple of reasons really, it adds to the aesthetic quality (ie I thought it'd look cool), and it makes construction a damn sight easier :D If I'd tried to match up the rails exactly and got them a little out it would've looked like cr*p, so instead I put 'em miles out and turned 'em into a 'design feature' .

Otherwise known as a "pragmatic engineering solution" :D

That looks really nice.

Looks quite good, but the thing that worries me a bit is the unfinished end of that file. I'd have passed it across the grinder a couple of times just to knock of the corners and generally soften the hard edges - Rob

:?: Erm - newbie here...

HOW do you keep the blade adjustment stable in the plane? I can see the cocobolo plate has a leg on it - is it wedged somwhere not shown in the pics? Hoping to learn! Nice looking, what with the contrast, can sympathise with aligning the edges, but agree - the file lets the whole overall look down - just my opinion, bet you're glad you've made it! It's a beaut! :D

Nice looking tool Steve, but how's the blade held in place? I see no wedge. Also, where do the shavings go? We need to see shavings

I really like the fact that you left the teeth on the file where it doesn't matter, looks kind of arty. For safety's sake however, I would have just knocked the corners off with a grinder, just to keep your blood "on the inside".

Nice tool. I look forward to seeing more.

Cheers

The blade is fitted as a seriously snug fit (ie tw*tted with a big hammer till it was in deep enough)... that's it. The file, err blade (bedded at 30), has seen a few passes over a grinding wheel, but it was soooo very blunt it really wasn't an issue anyway. I will have to clean up that top edge though.

The shavings at present just kinda do their own thing, to be honest it wasn't something I put much thought into. To make them behave I'd have to insert a strip of wood between the two runners slightly forward of and parallel to the blade, to direct them. As it is I'll probably never get round to it though :D .

The cocobolo isn't much more than decoration, though it does sit over the runners and helps stop the blade from deflecting them outwards.

All in all it performs well, I'll try and get some 'action' shots sometime 8) .
