hi
what's the centre finder thing called when using it on round logs, i just cant find one under centre finder. :?:

I've got one the same as in Pauls link - also use it for larger diameter blanks by marking the line as far as it will go,then extending it with pencil and ruler.
An alternative is a sheet of perspex - drill a small hole in the middle for marking through, draw or scribe several different diameter circles based on this centre, then hold it over the blank or log and find the "best fit",then mark the centre.
Or a series of discs from whatever material you have.

I use Odd Leg Calipers or a set of discs as Andrew refers to (Use them as templates on the bandsaw as well)

Me to also! By eye. Don't have to bother looking for my centre tool.

BUT if I'm doing pummels on square legs or rails I use a carpenters marking gauge. Set the point by eye to the centre and mark from all four sides, mark centre in the square you form. Or do similar using a pencil locked in your fingers.

I find it safer centring this way unless you can guarantee your timber blank is square.

I use the device in Paul's link. For larger blanks I've made a right angle with a 45degree leg out of ply, it's about 60cm square.
Logs that aren't round I use a pair of compasses
