Hi Guys,

Ivé made a few items ( not pens ) with celtic knots using wood veneers, but i've seen a few pics with what looks like metal laminations.

eg link

Any ideas what is used in these cases. I have looked at sheet aluminium stock , but the min thickness is 2mil, seems too thick, an cant seem to find sheet brass.

Any clues ? - are they special inserts for pen makers ?

Thanks

Laurence

fizzy drink cans, I cut them up with an old pair of scissers, use 2 part epoxy to glue them.

I thought of that but decided ( without cutting one up and looking ) that they might be too thin to have any visual impact.?

I'll have a look

Look up Shim Stock. I'll have a browse around my Metal Working suppliers to see if I can spot a source.

Come in a pressure bonded sheet or strip, the layers can be peeled or separated to thickness required.

Need rebonding with adhesive though for thickness for your use.

EDIT:
Chronos has some: Shim Packs Steel and Brass, it can be found in Aluminium, Bronze etc. if you search around elsewhere.

The sheet packs of copper etc. on that list may be of interest.

Loz to give you and idea what a drinks can looks like, this is one I made with a sandwich of ali can plastic and ali Hope is shows OK

Dalboy - I assume drinks cans were much thinner than that. I think i'll give them a go, what glue did you use ?

Nice tazza !

Hi Loz The cans where only there to give a visual line between the wood and the white plastic. On this piece I used superglue but next time will have a go at epoxy glue

If the drinks can is too thin then double it up?

A few months ago I went looking for sheet brass in a local model shop; they wanted £8 odd for a very small sheet about 6x 3 1/2" so I decided against it.
Went into a nearby charity shop to find a large sheet brass tray for 50p. Lots of brass seems to turn up in charity shops and they will be my first point of hunting in future.
