I'm after a pair of casement windows for my workshop (in the other thread). I'm contemplating having a go - especially as a nbr of suppliers seem to sell all the profiles.

Would anybody be able to help advise, etc?

I've been looking at the following site - http://www.manchestertimbermerchants.co ... ns_mcr.php

They seem to have a large selection of profiles. The cill ones - yes their obvious as are the mullions, but I'm not so clear on what the situation is when there is a mullion down the middle, but only opens on one side. Also what about the profile for the actual openers?

Cheers.

I've seen Flush (or Traditional) casements and they do look nicer than the Stormproof ones, but apparently are more prone to draughts, etc. Is this just marketing BS?

Anyone any suggestions\advice? I'm somewhat undecided.

Why do you want opening casements?
Dearer to buy off the shelf, dearer to make yourself, and less secure than fixed lights.
I've just made a window up for my workshop without casements, and put in 4/6/6.4 laminated units. Simple profiles machined myself.

I've always felt that unless there's an overwhelmimg reason for them not to - windows should always open, bring the outdoors in.:D

Now I could use the door - but I have young children and can't afford for them to wonder in whilst I'm doing stuff and\or machinary is running. I suppose one could use a door chain - but that isn't really letting much of the outdoors in on a good day (rare that they are these days).

On the security side - I'm inclined to go for laminated on both sides of the D\G unit. Also will fit simple metal shutters on the inside - either sheeted or just a rectangular shape with bars, that can open and be folded out of the way. The glass will have some of that silver or bronze solar control film applied - more for the privacy aspect that anything else.

I can help and advise you on making the casement windows, if you need help...

When you got a window with mullion down the middle, one fixed casement, one opening. You just make the frames up as usual, just make the fixed casement tight, and screw. The opening one usually 3mm equal clearance all the way around, with just a capillary groove around the outside is fine (thats for a traditional casement window).
Stormproof windows, do exactly what they are called, however a traditional window with a draught seal around the frame rebate is just as good and does not leak. I have tested that myself and the water cannot get thru. (obviously depends on the type of draught seal you use though)

Hope all that helps...... :?:
