As Mike says, an excellent book. The revised edition has more (and colour) pictures, so even better. A wealth of information on making AND using planes . Worth every penny,
Philly :D

Thanks for the quick replies chaps. Slightly bizarre that I can order it from Amazon.com for 11 pounds (inc postage to the UK), and yet it will cost me 24 pounds from Amazon.co.uk ex postage. No prizes for guess who I went with.

Philly out of interest looking at some of the planes you've made (on your blog as well as here) what do you use for the blades and where do you order it from.

I've been very impressed with them for what its worth.

Thanks Noddy! Very kind.
I use O1 tool steel, also known as "gauge plate". I bought mine from Tilgear and it was pretty cheap (a fiver for a piece enough to make a few irons). I have a series of articles starting in the next issue of "The Woodworker" magazine on making planes. The first article is on making and heat treating your own irons, just what you want to know
Hope this helps
Philly :D

I didnt think Amazon.com delivered to the UK?
Unless this is for bigger items such as tools etc maybe?

As both of 'em said, superb. I have the second edition and rate it very highly

I'll add my recommendation for the book, but would also echo the concerns about Amazon shipping charges from the US. I ordered one book from Amazon US a year or so ago (wasn't avaiable in the UK) and paid more in shipping than the cost of the book. The free shipping offer quoted on the Amazon site only applies to delivery within the US.

Thanks for the feedback. Amazon.com do post to the UK. postage on this book was about 4.50 pounds so it works out much cheaper than buying it here.

Hi Noddy67,

Yes, I can confirm that I also find Amazon US much cheaper (Talk about rip off Britain)

Here in Czechland we used to get small orders in 'duty free' but about a year ago they started applying import duty. Technically you're liable to import duty in the UK as well but usually ('tho by no means always) the UK Customs & Excise don't bother under about 30 quid (Maybe more now)

Note that I'm talking about import duty and not VAT which I understand is not applicable to books in any EU country
