Hi all,

I thought this little project may be of interest to some of you.

I recently was asked to fit out a camper van (modern VW van, converted into a camper) with some new units.

As some of you may know I have set up my own business doing mostly Woodturning, but I do a couple of days a week for a joinery company while my business is growing to the point I can support myself completly from it. This is a job through this company.

The van had some units in already but they weren't up to much:

So I ripped out the old stuff (this didn't take long!!) and measured up for the new stuff:

The backs of the units were all shaped to fit the wall of the van. Because of the shape, each unit had a slightly different shape to it   !!

I made some simple carcassing units which fitted in with the awkward seating set up in the back. They were sprayed white (not by me! (although I think I could have done a better job!!)) and the top was laminated.

It was made from 15mm (Supposedly) light weight MDF and the top was 12mm with an 18mm strip at the front to make it look heavier than it is.

I was very pleased with the out come, and the customer was over the moon!!

I hope you have enjoyed looking. All comments welcome.

Cheers,

Richard

Nice clean and simple although the handle detail isn't to my taste you have done a good job.

Morning All, Nice work but the first thing I noticed was the NUMBER PLATES. For security reasons these should have been blanked out !!!!

If that van/car is outside your workshop, for instance, some-one only has to get the cars reg details from Swansea, very easy, and they can find your wksp. Next day , break-in.

N.B You can be traced by your number plate.

Thanks for the comments guys. I know what you mean about the handle detail, although I do like it, but I didn't want any handles/knobs sticking out to catch in the limited space and I figured this looked good and would spray easily!!

I'm with Doc on the number plate thingy. Besides, if a suspicious looking woody is seen snooping around the factory I'll know where he's from

Life must get very tricky to cope with when you are that paranoid.

Look familiar?

Edited to add;

I just had a look at your website; bloody **** you're cheap!

I have also looked at your site.

I like your ideas, they do seems quite cheap. You could charge more and still be competitive IMO. But it is difficult, you don't want to price yourself out of the market.

Regards

If anyone wanted to know Richard's address then clicking on his web link is easier and cheaper than paying for a search at Swansea

And besides, it's not outside MY workshop anyway, it's the place I work a couple of days a week (I can't afford a Porsche - even one of those cheapo ones  )

Thanks for comments about my website. I don't want to hijack this thread but will make a comment. I can make ten toyboxes in a day and sell at least 25 a week at boot-sales. OK I have invested in a Forman that cost me £350 four years ago and it is the best tool I have bought. My stock is for general/utility use not meant to be "top mark" . I also use ex factory offcuts that I pick-up for pennies once a month. So, I estimate £4 for materials and about 20 minutes labour. I am happy with my profit margin.
Quick sales is what I go for.

By the way, don't think I need a website, I just did it for a break from the workshop. Also some on here may have noticed I am addicted to looking for bargains on the web , this helps. Dickies for example.

I think from the pictures your oak coffee tables look rather good. You sure you are not selling yourself short?

If you are happy them I am happy.

With the current state of play of some smaller businesses it's nice to see someone making a profit.

Keep it up.

Mick

Thanks Mick.
Actually they look better than the photos show :) . Must learn how to take a picture.
I buy my oak from Venebles at £2.00 a cu. ft at 3 pallets a time (postage free) There is alot of scrap but I sell it as firewood. Firewood got £4.00+ a cu ft this winter. I find boot-selling is the best way to advertise and have taken a record £729.00 in orders one Sunday morning , a weeks work(62 hrs). Now around £350 average but I won't give up. Just spend more time with the family. Priceless !!
