I need to run about 40 metres or so of cable down for my new workshop, I am sure I saw somewhere that someone used 10mm cable, is this really needed as 6mm has a current rating of 53amps and I cannot see I am going to exceed that. That gives me enough for a 40 amp ring main and a 6 amp lighting circuit, with a bit in reserve.

Or am I likely to experience some voltage drop or something?

I have a similar run of cable we used 10mm thats what my sparky said was the right size

I had 6mm laid as a temp connection for a 34m run and there was a definite dip in the lights when I started the table saw. I opted for 10mm for the permanent connection and the lighting blip went away.

but as the work is notifiable and you will be getting a sparky in to sign it off wont you? just ask them what size cable

My Son is a Sparky, so I have a tame one on hand, but I haven't spoken to him about details yet, just told him, once my new worksop is up I will need you to run a supply in for me. I was just trying to price up the cable online, and there is a big cost jump from 6mm to 10mm.

I have just had electric installed in my new workshop. It is powering 7 double sockets, 6x5ft daylight florescent lights, a 2Kw oil heater and a bathroom type fan heater. The spark who works in our hospital said this size cable would be plenty to do it all. Sorry I don't know the ampage; he did tell me but I've forgotten  The cable is about 20mm wide.
