Hello all

I hope you can help me, I am looking to obtain some wood for a small furniture project, plans of which I obtained from the US. However I am struggling to obtain the sizes required from any timber merchants nearby and was hoping for someone to point me in the right direction. At them moment I can only fined planed Redwood Pine up to a width of 225mm but some of my pieces are required to go up to 22.5" (580mm) wide! I am trying to avoid pine board and gluing two pieces together if I can.
Any help would be welcome.

Thanks Kevin

Hi Kevin and welcome.

I don't think you'll find pine boards 22.5" wide. The only option is to joint narrower boards together (which would be more stable anyway). I would avoid the pine boards sold in DIY chains where they join narrower boards together. Although they shouldn't, they always seem to warp and twist and are generally not very good quality.

Cheers

Hi Kevin
No-one will stock softwood that wide and if they did it would be all shapes and different sizes on different days.

You don't say what it is for. If it is a table top, then you can keep it reasonably flat by making it out of narrower boards, with alternate growth rings, and fixing it down to the table rails using buttons, allowing for seasonal movement.

If it is a cupboard side or back, you might wish to consider making it as frame and panel. The frame does not move significantly, but the panel is allowed to expand and contract as it likes, whilst still being confined to the groove around the inside of the frame.

Producing stable, wide panels is one of the wonderful challenges of woodwork!

Welcome.

If you dont fancy gluing up your own boards, theres a place just down the road from me, that supplies glued up boards upto 800mm wide. We used them at the place i used to work for pine boards, they do hardwood and also knot free pine. This is in sleaford though they may deliver to you but the cost might not be worth it, but there maybe somewhere near you able to help.

To give you an idea of price Quebec yellow is £10.50sq mtr for 19mm and £22sq mtr for 33mm thats not excluding vat though.

Hi 13 84 I presume you mean Kesteven Components i usually get my wooden worktops made up by them and buy panels from them. Good quality and decent prices.

Thanks for the help guys.
The project is actually for a solid wood cradle, The plans as I said where from the US and they suggested using Pine and obviously its not so much of an issue for them to get hold of.
I was trying to avoid gluing loads of boards together to just get the correct width for the various components as almost every part is over the maximum size of board I can obtain.
Also I have used timber board before from a DIY shop and found it very awkward to use and it did warp so was avoiding that if I could.
However the link to Kesteven Components is excellent, Thanks for that they are not to far for me definitely give me a bit more choice.
Again thanks

Kevin

Buy some decent T&G floorboard, glue it and cramp it up. Choose the pieces as you wish to get the finish you are after, plain, knotty, etc.....
and in woodworking, never expect an easy way if you want it right.
and dont procrastinate, especially when its a crib or a cradle......
