buying frenzeeeee !

I know it's probably been asked a thousand times and each person's opinion is different but here goes. i have a small work shop (garage/man cave) and i have an OK setup with all the main machines (no band saw) and i am looking to upgrade 2 of the machines. table saw/ planer thickness er / and a first buy band saw. The work is mainly using recycled timber and some new and making anything from furniture to a go-kart. like many i have wasted money and ended up with some thing that doesn't last long or has niggles that you could do without ! i am very !!! fortunate that i have been left some cash. so i am just trying to get some advice on buying bits. and i have trawled through the buying advice section so here goes.

Here are my limits set roughly.
£2000 for table saw
£1000 for band saw
£1000-1500 p/t

companies i am looking at.

record/axminster/excalibur/sip/shepach/starite/

if anyone has any other makes they can recomend that would be cool. a lot of re-sawing for the bandsaw. and i would like good hp for the money. a once in a life time spend for me so caution to the wind. not fussed about sliding table saw to much. and at least 10" p/t would be good.

any advice from experience would be great ! (homer) what would you buy and why ?

Lucky chap, a wonderful budget for the three machines. I am not sure if your looking for desktop machines or free standing machines, however fro. The budget I'm assuming they are fee standing. With the constant of space I would look at

table Saw : Wadkin, Startrite DS275, Mutico of a Secwick 315 with sliding table - should be able to get a brilliant machine for less tha. £1500.
P/T: Wadkin, Sedgwick, Mutico or Cooksley or a Hammer, all do a nice 10" or 12 " machine. This is oral ably where you need to spend the most money out of your budget.
Bandsaw. Hammer, Startrite 352 or 14S5. I have the 14S5 which is brilliant.

Thank you for the reply i am very luck and i am chomping at the bit i have heard of a fair few of those makes and i will have a good look around. i am a bit funny about second hand e bay etc as i have been stung on that front before but i will have a wee look so thanks for the reply and i will make a post of what i get and hopefully a few pics too and sorry yes free standing are startrite and record one in the same company ? i did look at the record 400 bandsaw.

should have prob mentioned that. it is a single garage but it's a big single if that makes sense. i use a lot of wall space and have drop down work bench etc to save space so it's not all that bad. there is mains electric to the garage. but nothing for the round socket's cant remember what phase that is lol. looking at freestanding all on castors.

That's a good budget. Interesting that no one has mentioned new machines. I can't really help you, I went down the second hand route for a lot smaller budget than you. Have you taken a look at the Axminster site? There stuff is quite well regarded I believe.

I can from having an excellent experience suggest both Daltons and Felder for secondhand machines. I got my bandsaw for free from Daktons when buying a secondhand Morticer, the reason was that it hadn't got a DC break and by the time they had added one it would have cost them more than the machine was worth.

Felder receive trade in machines that are on their WEB site, very hard to find the secondhand section, so give them a call and see what they have coming in. I got my Sedgwick P/T this way.

With the machines I've suggested an eBay buy is not very onerous, as long as the machine runs and you've asked a few basic questions / check it out when you pick it up, you really can't go too far wrong. Secondhand new machines is rather a different prospect that I've not been brave enough to venture down.

cheers alexam ! that was my first call on here looking at all the buying advice and the 350 and 400 seem to be mentioned a fair bit. i will have a look at that link and read the review too. i am really tempted by that machine it's in my number one spot at the mo. it will be getting a lot ! of use so i want some thing that is a work horse.

Cheers marmite ! i thought the same about the new machines but i know a lot of people really do recommend the older toys. and i cant blame them. i am always on that site lol. dreaming of my next buy. and i get small stuff from there a lot. really good company and there customer service is really good. i would be looking at the trade or maybe the pro stuff if the price is right. i like that you get a guarantee and if there are any troubles you can give some one a ring.

cheers ! i have never of either so that's good for me i will pop over and see what they have to offer on the second hand front. i think as this is a one off never again type thing i just want to get it right and not have many or any regrets but i will have a look and my experience with new machines off e bay has not been great but never bought an old school second hand machine. apart from an elektra becum but that's as sweet as a nut. good German engineering.

i will make a post on what i get and what i think as soon as i have it all set up

asked for freebies but they said no ...... but that was because it was very very low cost delivery. i do mean low so i am happy with that. very helpful down there first time i have used them.

With that lot it might be worth hiring a pallet truck for a few days. Do not underestimate what a PITA the Record is to get off its Pallet. Plus you will want to move things around once they arrive.
