However...... As a novice I don't know where to start

Made a start at long last; it may take some time to finish

Using Walnut, a total of 198 pieces plus some dominoes
Each piece of Walnut cut to approx. length by hand then cut by mitre saw before finishing by hand on newly discovered shooting board

The toughened and bevelled glass is 8 mm 400 mm x 600 mm, but I may buy another piece at 10 mm

As someone who has spent their entire adult life earning a living making stuff for others; boring stuff mainly like roofs and fences and garden gates, also assembling and fitting kitchens and wardrobes, that sort of thing, i would like to now make some stuff for myself and first on the list (when i get the time) is a nice bookcase or two, then a bed and a dining table & chairs and then some stuff for the garden.

Top of my bucket list though is to build my own timber framed house and dream workshop in a quiet spot with no neighbours. The only fly in the ointment is the ridiculous price of building land in this country. I keep searching for the right plot at the right price or some derelict house i could knock down and start again but the search has been a fruitless one so far. The older i get, the more this dream eludes me and short of inheriting a windfall, i think it may be one i have to let go, but not quite yet. My reserve plan is to convert a suitable vehicle to a comfortable mobile home and set off travelling before i punch my clock for the last time.

My father was a dreamer. He always was going to do something tomorrow. Took me a few years to realise this and learn to get on and do stuff. Don't put things off.

All his life my dad wanted to build a really good model railway layout for himself. He even had a model shop at one point, but never built his dream layout. When he died I had the task of selling hundreds of model loco's and other assorted rolling stock, many in unopened boxes. As said above, make a start, get on with it. Whatever it is.

You should give Shetland a whirl skipdiver. Don't know what plots in the middle of nowhere cost where you are but up here you're looking at 30-50k. Timer framed houses are the norm so there's plenty of experience to draw on too. I say this from my old stone croft house however!

I want to stay in this area. Home is where the heart is as they say and i'm not a dreamer as suggested, just a realist. Life sometimes gets in the way of your plans.

I was an engineer for most of my working life and had a real passion for all things metal but couldn't make even the simplest thing out of wood without it being a total mess. 20 years ago my working life came to an abrupt end due to illness and other (lesser) pastimes came to the fore to fill the endless hours with nothing in particular to do. 13 years ago we moved to the seaside and an old passion for the sea came to the fore as I managed to potter proudly about in the boat I'd always dreamed of having. As a boat owner however something had to give on the woodworking front so I taught myself how to scarf patches into it to keep it afloat. Maybe 3 years ago the boat had to go too as I became practically housebound but my new-found love for all things wood remained and I experimented with a series of mementos I've been handing out to the family as quick as I can make them. A carved mirror for one, a marble machine for another, a scroll sawn admiral's clock for another, and so on. I only have the three newest great grand kids to go now and everybody will finally have something totally unique hand crafted and built 100% for them. I wish there were time and energy to spare to learn more, get more tools, get a proper workshop, build *proper things* (dammit) but there's little point in hoping for a miracle that may never occour and everything to be gained from just one more cut or one more brainwave that comes to fruition.
