this is how i do my goblets - everyone has there own way- this isnt meant to be "the only way" or "you must do it this way" just a breif guide, as always find which way/tools work for you.

I started with a blank of light coloured Elm 9" long by 2 1/2" diameter

I marked out the bowl section and the base using the golden rule (1/3rd to 2/3 rds) as a guide

heres the bowl roughed out

a bit more defined- at this stage i stop on the outside and hollow out the inside

I use a spindle gouge on its side to hollow out- this bowl is about 3" deep- if your learning i would advise you to not go any deeper than 2" until you get the hang of end grain hollowing.

here it is hollowed out- before sanding

I sand this section now as you cant come back to it once the stem is started- here it is sanded and oiled

I start to shape the stem

here the stem and base are complete

and here it is after being sanded and oiled

and here it is done- i dont revesrse turn goblets - I part them of then clean up the base by hand

I really like this design- i might make several similar to play around a bit more with the proportions though.

I hope this is of some help- any questions just ask, if you dont want to ask here drop me a pm :D

I love making goblets, there is such a variety in designs and style to make. I've never done one quite thi shape though I do do them with the thicker stem as you have. I also shape the outside completely before doing the inside and then get my thickness that way. I(f doing a thinner stem I fill the bowl with tissue and bring the tailstock up until it just starts revolving to support the stem whilst cutting,

Cheers George. I missed this first time round so nice to see it.

Thanks cornucopia Would have thought of sanding and finishing the bowl part of the goblet then move on to the stem after a lot of messing
about, this tutorial has saved me from making lots of mistakes.
Top marks for sharing....

Thanks George, I have made severals goblets but all with a slim stem, For some reason I believed that this was the only way to do them. I'm glad to have seen this demo of yours as now I can make goblets as I see them as I would like them . REgards Boysie.

George lovely to see this up again, and thanks for redoing your website and blogg, and no more dummy spitting- ok..

BTW do you drill holes before hollowing out, or just go for it??

nice work George. I must get round to making one of these. Something nice about the thought of drinking red one out of a turned goblet.

no hole drilling steve- after all- its only a couple of inch

Goblets are probably my favourite thing for turning. Whenever I get stuck or can't think what to do I'll turn a goblet. There are so many variations on style. Google goblet, chalice or glassware for images of so many different types.

Thanks for that George.
I have only ever made about 4 goblets ..... 2 that were worth saving!
But, I am now inspired to try agin. I may have go at one this weekend if I get any turning time.

I have to say that I was lucky enough to stop by at Georges on the way home during a long journey the other day.

saw this goblet and it was cracking. Looks much better in the flesh so to speak than in the pictures and it looks damn good in the pictures.

and not even a mention of that green monster!

Well I did get to touch it. But ever since I have had withdraw symptoms especially after getting back to work on my Hegner. Mind you I should not talk badly of her she has done me proad.

:D

One day may be I will be in a position to get a VB. Then watch out. 6ft dia lidded forms taking the world over.

thank you

I have updated a few of my old threads to 450 pix- theres a couple more still to do then they will all be the same- you can find them all on my blog

Lol Mrs Silver.

You should see my fire wood pile out the back of my work shop.

George's work really is great in pick up .No I am not saying it to blow smoke up his left trouser leg, if it wasn't good stuff I would just not comment.

But then he does have a VB.

no lightweeder- i dried this elm myself- in 3x3 sections from a tree i bought several years ago. you can do green goblets but they would have to much thinner than this design.

Seasoned wood hey George. Yo have crossed to the dark side.
