hello folks- i thought i'd try out some of the acrylic rod which is becoming avalible to us, this is the first acrylic i've ever turned. started out as 2" diameter rod by 6" long- this box has a 18tpi thread.

I have some clear to try next and some leopard and zebra effect too.

all comments welcomed

Hi George, its quite nice but I think wood looks much much better. I also notice the two halves dont match on this one,I think matching is better.
Sorry to sound critical

JT

thanks jt
I forgot to say i made a mistake on the male thread and had to start again on it so I ran out of material to make it symetrical

That is certainly different George
Looks nice, and feels nice to handle i suppose :D
How did you find hollowing it out :?:
Still prefer wood meself :D

thank you folks

it hollowed just like wood paul using the single tip oland style tools.

I have just realised that as long as i didnt hollow to deep i can turn a male thread in scrap wood and alter the side thats too long to match the other side- one of the many advantages of threads.

Are you thinking of mixing and matching the acrylic with wood George?
Have you managed to rid the workshop of it's perfume yet :?:

Have been thinking about it myself for thread inserts and the like instead of boxwood, it's relatively good stability seems ideal.

i must admit i'm struggling to find stable boxwood- i have just aquired two crown green bowls which are/were about 100 years old so very stable and dry.

I'm not surprised, about 60 years ago I spent a lot of time watching one of the last people to do boxwood carving of printing blocks do his work.

He had his own little workshop with several precision (watchmaker quality) wood working machines (self built) to aid the segmenting and finishing of the blocks for larger plates.

During the last few years he was having great difficulty in obtaining any usable new wood, resorting to cutting up and salvaging old pre-war blocks to get anything stable.

i love it george, matching or not. What did you end up turning it with, and what polish did you use.

thanks steve- i used allot of neg rake scrapers and i sanded it through to 1500 then applied eee by hand then fianlly buffed with a loose leaf mop with more eee

Commenting purely on the material. I'm not sure. I like it, but wood is so much nicer.

Hi George,
I certainly like the finish on these pieces and I can understand how the re-cutting of the thread has meant a difference in the two halves. I have admired the previous sets and wonder if there is a particular use for them?
Nice job,
Regards,
Ian

Hi George,

Looks like it turned out well! I take it you got on ok with the abrasive, judging by the quality of the finish!!!

Nice little box. Well done.

Richard
