There are some very cleaver turners out there even if they do use car spring gouges

I wondered what 2 contrasting woods would look like as 2 bowls from 2 planks of the same width? I had some more of the oak I used before and I had a length of black walnut that was just 3 ½" wide. So the walnut was cut to 10 ½" long and the bits glued so the grain was reversed for the centre bit and then cut on the lathe as in #7,722 The oak the same. I worked on the principle that if it wasn't going to work I would have 2 bowls, one in oak and the other in walnut.

A bit more experimenting using 3 ½" square ash and some black walnut gave me some nice results too

Start with this

And you get this

9" diameter X 3" deep

And 4 bits of ash 3 ½" square looks good too

The only limit is your imagination I suppose?
