Hi - I'd been a wee bit naught yesterday and half-hijacked Nick Welfords lovely 'Blotter' in ABW thread... due to youthful (at 44  ) exhuberance and enthusiasm.. for which I again apologise.
Anyways.. I'd popped in a piccy of an ABW bowl just made recently...
and although its not "Directly" a turning tale .. there's a wee bit of a story behind that bowl .. and I thought maybe some may find it to be of interest...
Given that it was a 'swap' of a bowl for a very enjoyable experience..
The story goes like this :
I met a very nice fellow, by the name of John Pitson, just by chance really .. and he told me he was a falconer, and ran a falconry school.
I'd never touched a bird of prey, but was interested in listening to him enthuse about what superb creatures they were .... and as we got to having a good old yarn, he said.. come to my place and I'll let you see.. we're not open to the public as such, but if you're interested and would like a look round.. come and I'll show you my some of my birds.
So - what I thought, and then mentioned to him was ... Great ! I'd love to .. can I perhaps pay you as a 'visitor' ? -- he refused that, point blank.
-- Ok then.. I will 'give' you something by way of reciprocating and thanking you.... and that was the bowl I'd posted in the thread there. So it became the 'Falcon Bowl' ....
Here's a little taste of the 'exchange' ( I think I definately got the better end of the deal ! ) .... I hope this isn't an inappropriate thing to show ... and as it was connected to the turning, I thought maybe I could let you see, just out of interest ! Hope thats ok !
This is one of John's eagles .. I'm sure he called it a Felugia Eagle or something similar.. This weighed 4lbs.. heavy for a bird !
I got to fly this one a short way.
This is John himself .. explaining about this particular bird, which I believe is a hybrid Perigrine Falcon ... He flew it.. it dived from about 300feet up to swoop past at maybe 4 feet off the ground.. and John explained it would be nearing 200mph at its top speed.. incredible !
In more close-up :
I got to try my hand at hunting.... this is me with 'Tetley' .. a female Harris Hawk.
Quite an amazing day... never been near anything like that before.. I'd love to again though ! May have to make 4 dozen bowls for him !
Hope you like
