This is a bench/box for the entry way. When we come in from outside it gives us a place to store our shoes & change into slippers. The lumber is former 4" x 4" x 4 ft. long blocking for machinery while in shipment. It is red oak & as the material came from several machinery blocks it was a little difficult to get color or grain matching so it's not perfect. However, the wife likes it so I'm not in trouble.

that looks very nice - particularly as it came from reclaimed timber. =D> I assume that the lid is hinged - did you use a piano hinge or something else? Also is there anything to hold the lid up?

Thanks for the encouraging comments folks.

Steve: I used a brass piano hinge & set it absolutely flush with the surfaces of the lid & it's anchor board. No need for a restraint for the lid as the back has a 15 deg. slope against which the lid rests when it is open. The piano hinge is located 1/8" from the bottom edge of the back so that it nests well against the back & the box does not have to be set too far out from the wall so that the lid does not strike the wall.

must say the style suits the grain and makes the whole thing look very thought out. i think too many people want perfect wood, rather than to take advantage of the benefits of striking such grain. 8)

Lovely box Lee. I really like proportions but think the top rails may be just a little too high for me.

Nope...not pallets J.J.(our shippers use those too) These are 4" x 4'square timbers 4ft.long & used to keep the machinery from shifting while in transit. The nice thing about them is that they have never had a nail or staples driven into them & are relatively clean but rough sawn.
Cleaning them up with the planer then the thicknesser usually brings them in at about 3-3/4" square.
