As some of you know it was my bithday yesterday - thanks for all the nice messages! I am a grand age of 270 -- erm I mean 27.

Anyway, a couple of the presents that I was given were some lovely books:

1. 'The Workbench' by Lon Schleining and
2. The Toolbox Book by Jim Tolpin

Now, my first comments are: WOW! Some of the examples and photos in these two are simply amazing. The workmanship of some of the benches and tool storage are very inspirational!

The style of writing is great on both books, explaining a little of the history going back to the 1700's upto modern day and how things have evolved.

The workbench book features benches from some very acomplished craftsman including Sam Maloof who surprisingly has quite a modest looking bench.

The tutorials and guides inside are easy to follow and well drawn, all in imperial unfortunatly but then they are mostly american books.

The toolbox book is more than just toolboxes, it details and describes everything from dowled handled totes to full rolling chests, and wall-hung cabinets. If your lookig for better solutions to store your tools, this is definitly the book to read!

Both books are by Taunton press who seem to publish exceptionaly high quality books. The photo's are 90% all colour, sharply printed and the covers are gorgeous - I feel I ought to make a lovely book-case to store these in.

They are so good I've gone and ordered a couple more Taunton books - for example, Scott Landis' Workshop book.

Truelly inspirational, with loads of information, plans, constructional notes and theories!

Highly recommended.

For those who are nosey and want to know what else I got for my birthday, well SWMBO bought a couple sets of Bessey corner clamps - these are subtly little plastic jobbies with a ratchet action and are used to help putting together cabinets - one on each corner. I think these are going to great for use with my pocket hole jig.

She also bought a tool-belt! I feel like norm now!

Nice one Byron, I may have to stick those on the xmas list.

Strangely your 16 Days younger than me. No WW toys or books for my birthday tho :(

The coincedances are worrying:

Both work/worked in IT and want to get out
Both building a workshop
Both 27

Do you also have a birthmark on your shoulder that looks like Jesus playing golf with elvis?

YES!

We're not a million miles away from eachother either

Hi Byron

Nice books! I've got a copy of Lon Schleining's book and it's brilliant - beautiful illustrations and some excellent workbench projects. I wish I'd invested in it before I built my workbench - I would have done a few things differently.

27 eh? I'll never see 27 - or 37 - or - Humbug!

(only joking!)

Les
