bog oak- NOW WITH NO DING!!

hello all, i've been fascinated by bog oak for a long time now and i have finally managed to find a lage piece to turn, this pice is about 12 long by 6" wide by about an inch thick. it has been dated to be 5000 bc- its incredible to work with and hold although a touch soft. I didnt have the heart to sand out that ding on one edge as i didnt want to waste any of the wood in doing so.

Lovely piece George. I like the simplicity of it. I'd be tempted to sort out that edge though. It kind or jumps out at me in all the photos :roll:

Perhaps a small bevel along both sides? It is a lovely piece of wood / work. I have a piece donated that I want to get working on once I get set up. Hopefully soon :wink:

Yes i would remove the ding.

the ding:hmm yes the more i look at it the more i agree that i does spoil the piece maybe a bevel would be in order.

the ding does look worse on the photo's than it does in the flesh- the present mrs cornucopiua had'nt even noticed it, but she doesnt tend to look at my wood as much as she used to :lol:

Like the wood George, Shame about the "ding" edge.
I think that wood like that should not have any blemishes on it. You owe it to the wood. :wink:

Interesting looking timber and I really like the simplicity of what you did with it.
I have to agree about removing the nick in the edge though.

Just an idea for a simple fix for the ding... make a feature of it with a round nose router bit ...scallop, with a corresponding one on the diagonally opposite side (I like symetry :roll: )

btw I'm a great fan of bog oak, apart from the smell when turning...4 to 5000 year old pond water still smells
