I'm trying to make some new pinless blade guides for my Ancient Meddings scroll saw.

What is the typical thickness of a scroll saw blade. That is the thickness of the metal used. Would anyone know or be able to measure for me please.

And is this different from pinned blades.

looking at a pack of no 5 blades, stated dimensions 0.45 x 1.15mm
pinned blades are generally much thicker.
if you search for blades you will usually find sizes on the blade descriptions :)

This may be of help, Hegner blade clamps are .5mm, .7mm and 1mm.

Take care.

Thank you for all replies and especially gilljc,ChrisR, powertools.

I've decided to make 2 blade guide sets. One with slots at 0.7 mm and another one at 1mm and try out both. I'll start cutting slots tomorrow pm.

Take care ALL.

For the standard Hegner style of clamp, 0.5mm and 0.7mm would be better. 1mm will be too wide for most blades. I think Hegner recommend 1mm only for #9 and above.

If you intend clamping between two screws, a 1mm slot would probably work for all size blades.

I think my thickest #7 blade is about 0.017". 0.5mm is near enough 0.020" as I am sure you know.

martinka,

Thanks for the input. Looks like I need to make 0.5mm +0.7 instead. You also inferred that I might use 2 opposing screw threads and I really had not considered the hardness of these until then. So I'm using a M5 grade 7 hex machine screw on the right and a M5 set screw on the left ( facing the machine). I have an M5 allen key with a hand grip for a head to use as a quick release lever.

Hope it works but on hold for a week as my eldest son has just broken 3 fingers on his left hand whilst mountaineering so needs some help....!
