Beautiful job!!! What finish is on the handle?

4 coats of amber shellac to the end grain. 2 coats to the face grain. followed by 2 coats of paste wax buffed to shine.

Stewie;

Thanks for the info Stewie, and what a result!!

Many thanks for the detailed answer. I'll see if Klaus and Pedder can help me out. I've since found a chap in the US who sells backs, so now it's just getting the right kind of steel. A good mate of mine is the manager of a local steelworks, when I next see him, I'll see if he can suggest something. At the moment I'm just struggling with knowing what kind of steel to buy. I might just buy some really bad old saws and cut them up for blades, as I've seen a few people doing that.

Amazing saw =D>

And thank you for the pictures from bottom and from above :D

In that case you may as well salvage the brass backs, Bill Carter style! You'll probably get a cheap no name rusty thing on the bay for not much. Junk the handle, maybe the blade but use the Brass back.
Corneel posted something on his blog about a saw steel supplier on Ebay, Germany.
