Hi,

OK so my home made jig attempts all failed pretty much. I was able to sharpen, but not get same angles each time, so last week i bought a Jig - The Robert Sorby Universal jig, via Stiles&Bates ( excellent service by the way UK to Ireland in 3 days !! ) It arrived on Thursday - but wasn't able to get into the workshop till saturday.

Well i got it installed, the directions are idiotproof thankfully :) , I was able to then get all my tools reground and sharp on saturday - my spindle gouges are back as new, my bowl gouge is "irish " !!, and my scrapers, rouging, and parting tools, all wonderful. I even had to show swiMbo that i am now " A Sharpening God !!! !.

Well to test I turned this little bowl. - 3 x 4 inch - Annoying though the pic makes the side look unequal - i assure you they are perfect ! - ish :)

hey Loz, do you mind me asking how much it cost in euros with shipping?. And did the shipping crowd sting you for tax?. I'm here in Limerick, and need to get my hands on something good for sharpening my gouges.. Could you give me the link to the companies web page where you bought your jig. Thanks

Lovely bowl!

I have been thinking about getting the Wolverine sharpening jig with the Varigrind attachment, which I have seen demonstrated and looks rather good.
It also comes with a sturdy toolrest to replace the frankly terrible one
on my grinder.

Does anyone else here use one of these?

Hi,

Not sure exactly as yest as was credit card, but cost £76.10 with 19 delivery, so approx 120 euros in total by todays exchange rate.

Expensive yes, but I could not find an IE supplier, and already the price has paid for itself in the joy of overcoming the fustration in sharpening i have had since i got my lathe back xmas last.

I got the

The 477 Even fits perfectly against my narrow, 6 inch, grey wheel, B&Q grinder, so you dont need a very wide slow speed pink wheeler ( YET ) .

However if you PM Mike ( Cutting Crrew ) - I think he still has a Tru-Grind Sharpening system for sale - Might be cheaper than the Sorby.

Well, I finally saved up my pennies and after rave reveiws here I bought the Sorby Deluxe Universal
Sharpening system instead of the Wolverine.

Wow! The difference between the grinds from this and my cack-handed handheld attempts is astonishing.

If you (like me) don't have the skill/patience to make your own jig - BUY ONE OF THESE!

Easy to set up and use - certainly transformed my cheapo grinder, I can tell you.

HIYA DIGAZZ. have you been to Joe McKennas in Parliment St. in Limerick . They have a large range of tools. I went down there from Carlow a few months ago and bought the Sorby Fingernail on its own ,at that time the price was not too bad with Stg. as it is now I'm not too sure. Give them a try. Theres another place in Nenagh I cant rember there nameI think it RacI'm not sure but the have a well stocked shop so I was told. You bought your Nova from Mc Kennas so you should get a good deal there. REgards Boysie.

is there an attachment to the sorby that tells you what angle you have the adjustable platform set at?

i recently got one of these 2nd hand but it didnt have one and i struggle a little to get the same angles.

Yes, there is a piece of metal a bit like a Stanley knife blade with the angles marked on it but, to be honest I have been doing it by eye.

If you want to keep the angles consistent, mark on the shaft of the chisel where it goes through the clamp
so that next time you can just slip the chisel in as far as the mark and the angle should be the same.
