Does this need some sort of protective finish, or left to weather naturally?

remove the peg as magpies will use it to take the eggs or young
The entrance hole size depends on the species you hope to attract:

25 mm for blue, coal and marsh ****
28 mm for great ****, tree sparrows and pied flycatchers
32 mm for house sparrows and nuthatches
45 mm for starlings
do not treat the inside

Nice job! As said remove the peg. I'd just put some Matt Acrylic varnish on the roof and leave it at that. Not sure about an oil finish, could take some time for the smell to go and may put off potential residents.

We bought a woodcrete bird box and had residents (Blue ****) within a few months of it going up.
