Some of you may have seen that I posted a query about a particular work holding problem and Dalboy kindly offered to give me the benefit of his experience and show me some basics.
I took him up on his kind offer and paid him a visit on Monday.
All I can say is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!
Although Dalboys' shed posed a slight problem for two 'ahem' rotund gents we squeezed in and Derek proceeded to walk me through everything from sharpening, different types of chucks and their jaws, spindle work - coves, beads etc etc, the use of the various tools including the dreaded skew.
Mrs Dalboy kept the coffee coming and we went on to bowl work and hollowing, jigs, tips and more sharpening.
Derek, you're a fantastic teacher, a thoroughly nice bloke and a damned fine turner.
I learned more on Monday than I have in six months of experimenting.
It was so useful to have someone who was willing to let me have a go, steady my hand when it needed it and offer advice as you watched my efforts -- exactly what I needed.
I've not been able to put the teaching into practice until today as I came down with a stinking case of ManFluMAX!! and spent the rest of the week in bed.
Feeling better now so it's of to the workshop to see what I can come up with for the Winter Turning Challenge.
Cheers Derek. You're a legend!!
