Big machine scams! - Gumtree Scotland

Spotted these on gumtree just now. Too big for my shop but might be a bargain for someone else on here.

I would say that there is no chance that this isn't a scam.

A popular auction site has a never ending stream of felder machines being advertised in an area of scotland each time by a new seller. Quite how they get away with the listings is beyond me.

Just looked at my local big kit supplier and found these for similar sorts of prices so I don’t see why not, and how could you scam somebody it either exists or it doesn’t and you wouldn’t buy it blind surely. No sorry I haven’t got the faintest idea what a multi drill machine does either ha ha

So there are some new big machines showing on gumtree, these are apparantly in Bridge of Earn. The wording of the ads look very similar, all have "transport available". Certainly making me more sceptical, I'm gonna message both sellers, see what response I get...

I'd say it was a scam as well, they are half price.

Tell them you live in Abernethy or Perth and will come see it on monday as both are less than 10 mins away. That will tell you if they are genuine or not

Looking closely, the Casolin and Martin are pics taken of brand new machines in a dealers showroom.

Felder might be in a workshop but pics are grainy

comparing the Martin to the sedgwick is like comparing a Bugatti veron to a ford focus.
Those Martin saws are lovely, I have an altendorf and still get saw envy.

I was on the look out for a compact tractor last year, the number of scams on gumtree, ebay and market place was unbelievable . I reported a couple I could prove were scams, but days later they were still up.
I drove to Larne one day to see a yanmar advertised at a good price. I knocked at the door and a young woman answered saying I was the second caller that day. The previous caller had come over from GB on the ferry with a trailer to pick it up, and had paid online in advance.
It was annoying her because they had obviously picked her address at random.

The popular auction site too if ten has machines that are based in Scotland, usually on a 48hr auction or buy it now, based in some out of the way place. Usually want bank transfer! They are almost always scams. The last one I spotted was advertising a machine I had sold a week earlier to the opposite end of the country through an auction site.

Cars on ebay are the same, my Esprit has been up for sale about 8 times.

I sort of assumed machines like this are so niche they wouldn't be of interest to scammers... How wrong!

Yes, that is MWM's old showroom in Leicester. The framed pic on the wall is the old Wadkin factory - that now has pride of place in their new reception area.

Sounds suspicious. The sellers location is on my regular cycle route, very close to where I live. I have asked him where I can view the thicknesser. I am looking for one, but not at that price! The response will tell if it's a scam or not.

Same happens with motorhomes on ebay.

In my experience they tend to pop up on Friday night for the weekend so that the eBay staff are less likely to spot them and they can hook some unwitting punter.

Usually about half the price and they generally look fake.

Like prices aren't rounded numbers.

Descriptions are either too detailed and effusive or lacking in the obvious details.

A few years ago I was looking for a rough terrain fork lift truck and saw what looked like a good buy on eBay. It claimed to be in Scotland. It is a long way to travel and I am no expert on fork lifts so I contacted someone who inspects this type of vehicle to view it for me. At that point it became obvious it was a scam. The scammers had hacked someone’s account.

I think they pick Scotland because of the distance to travel from large centres of population in England and Wales. Probably looking for a “returnable” deposit with the balance on collection.

With regard to the woodworking machines being very specialist, if it is a scam they are looking for buyers who are a long way away so the pool is large. This could include mainland Europe but I suspect brexit has stopped that. I have also noticed a lot of cars which look like “good buys” for sale in Scotland. No doubt most are genuine but I would be wary.

I bought another fork lift and when I sold it the buyer was very genuine but also very wary, he owned a heavy haulage business and had been scammed over an item in Ireland, sent a lorry to collect it and there was nothing there.
