Miles away - totally impractical...
I'm thinking about adding a bevel box to my Christmas list but recall mention that the batteries tend to run flat even when it's not being used. I know some people take the batteries out but nevertheless found myself wondering what batteries they take?

I haven't had the same problem with mine, the batter is a CR3032 which are relatively inexpensive.

Hi,

I have had no problems with mine either.

I've never heard of these before so I googled it - neat.
Do they really work?
Are they any good?
Do I need one? - Forget that of course I need one it's a tool.

They are good, I used to use and ex military inclinometer but these are much more convenient and quite accurate.
Do you really mean need or do you mean want?

Very handy bit of kit to have Titus. I'm sure you could easily convince yourself you need one :D
They're not that expensive either so wont give you pangs of guilt for buying one

I could be tempted - anyone know where's the best place to buy.....or should I wait for a Lidl/Aldi type offering?

Thanks for the info. Which one did you buy off Ebay and was it an ebay shop/merchant
I might follow your route.

Funny you should say that the bevel box runs through batteries even when it is switched off. I bought a digital angle finder from Lee valley Tools, like this onefrom Axminster. Every time I want to use it the battery is dead. I now have to take the battery out when not using it (most of the time).

Never had problems with batteries using the bevel box. I bought it last years @ Ax and since I have it I use it very often for multiple tasks.

I think it's a great tool to have in a shop.

Matt, yes some of them do have a battery issue. Mine's a Wixey and the battery does run down if left in it. The guy that looks after Wixey in the UK (although mine came from the US) offered to replace it but I never got around to it.

Mine was on offer from Axminster for £15 a few months ago. I went in bought that and ended up spending £90. They are cunning that way.

The bevel box is fantastic and I have no problems with batteries.

My wife thought I had gone completely mad when I bought mine. I spent a good hour testing the angle of everything in the house.

All,

There is a "possible" known issue with this type of battery and the handling it is subject to. Because the pos and neg faces are so close to each other at the edge, when the battery is handled the residue from the skin is enough to bridge the insulation and cause a slow discharge, that combined with possible cold and damp condensation adding to the bridge. Clean with a quick wipe of meths and don't handle with bare skin. Similar to halogen bulbs the residue from the skin causes premature failure but for a different reason.
