This is my entry into the other compo

It is 6" Square Oak atm

It's going to be a chair side table but with a twist. I'm going to carve a spiral into it.

There's no way I'm going to do this in one hit from start to end, so I wondered how I can mount it so that I can put it on and take it off many times without much hassle.

Any ideas?

3" or 4" faceplate and still use your tailstock and then you can take it on and of as many times as you like but it does tie up a faceplate until the projects finished.

You really need a faceplate ring to fit your chuck jaws, that way it will run as true as possible on remount.make sure you have a deep centre in the tailstock end to maximise the wood contact to lower the PSI loads on the wood.

I'd go with Chas. Same thing as George reccommends really but it clamps into the chuck instead of threading on and they are a lot cheaper as well.

Perfick Thanks.

With the live centre end, should I drill a hole so it can sink down into it a bit? Rather than sitting on just a small point.

Basically I am assuming that you will be roughing it to a round then doing the twist. You shouldn't need too much hold as long as it is centred properly. It isn't the weight of the wood that is a problem it is being offcentre and you are working with a symetrical piece. Make sure you don't wind the tailstock too hard as it can damage the head.

Would not hurt, then if things slacken off a bit without you noticing it won't come adrift.

Cheers Pete, Chas

It certainly pays to shop around.
