Just wondering what would be considered the best way of cutting mortices where they lie at a midpoint along a length e.g for bottom table rails

Do you just measure them? or is there a specialised marking gauge for this purpose?

Hope this makes sense, please correct my terminology if it is off! Thanks!
 
mortise gauge, mark it out then cut out the waste, can you show us some photo examples of what you're talking about?
