Ok.... so Tony (xc-mtbr) came yesterday and took away my Axminster AWVSL1100, and i'm now after a new (or good second hand) lathe.

Currently i'm strongly favouring the Jet 1220VS..... that is unless any of you guys out there can convince me otherwise... :!:

Sooo..... assuming none of you do, where's the best place to buy from..? Axminster, C.R.M. Tools... etc plus what's the best price anyone's seen for this as i don't see them being 'discounted' anywhere.

Finally.... i see from doing a few google searches that they seem to have a 5yr warranty in the US.... is it the same over here too...??

Many thanks once again to this great site in offering help and advice.

my advice wuld be to buy that woodfast 910 blisters got for sale - be quick tho as he's going to the bay this evening ;)

.... yeah i saw that too.... :D

problem is it's around 3 times the price and 4 times the size of what i'm after.

Having found my niche i'm looking to downsize... not go bigger. But thanks anyway.

OK..... so it looks like it's gonna be a Jet 1220VS then.....

next question is... where's the best place in the Southern region (i live in Southampton) to buy this..? I can only find two 'local' stockists, Axminster & CRM Tools.

Just rung CRM as they're just down the road, they have a showroom, but don't have any wood lathes in it...!! :x it would be nice to actually see one before i buy....

Plus.... having done some googleing...... i've come upon BriMarc Tools & Machinery, nothing wrong there..... but i notice it's the same address as Axminster Tools.... :?:

That's because Brimarc are wholesalers and sell through distributors like Axminster. Personally I would buy through Axminster as their customer service is second to none. I have owned a Jet 1220 manual and it was an excellent machine. The only doubts I would have is that it appears to vary the speed using a simple rheostat which is fine for most work but will overheat and stall if you have a serious out of balance lump on it. The Record 305 vs uses a 3 phase motor stepped down to single phase by an inverter which is a better system but of course is several hundred pounds more expensive.
