Hi everyone

Well I finally made a couple of pens! Seemed to take forever to get all the bits and pieces together!

Anyhow, my question is what is a good finish for wooden pens? I got some wax and some friction polish which have brought them up well, but I was just wondering what else gives a good shiny and durable finish?

I anticipate moving on to acrylic pens at some point so any advice on a finish for these would be great too!

Cheers

hi, and welcome to the forum. wax and friction polish will give it a good shine, but it doesnt last five mins. the best finish you can give your wooden pens is with ca/blo. yes superglue and boiled linseed oil.
here is one i showed earlier
https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=25918&highlight=latest+pen not only does it give a nice shine but the finish lasts for a very long time, 18 months plus. i use micromesh peds up to 12,000 grit then hit it with the ca/blothen repeat with micromesh to 12,000 grit. i then finish with two coats of ren wax to repell fingerprints. Acrylics are easier, i turn the same as wood, micromesh wet through all the grits, then finish with ren wax ( renaissiance wax ) like all turning , make sure you use very sharp tools. any problems just shout, but i will not be back till thurs eve.

Thanks for that

How do you apply the superglue and boiled linseed oil?

Is this a mixture that is applied or are they applied seperately?

Some good advice here

Dave

PS thanks to greggy for pointing me in that direction a while back
