Between the two models which is best for the leigh jigs? The Festool OF1010 or OF1400. Is the extra power of the OF1400 a distinct advantage or its 1.8kg extra weight a disadvantage?

Definitly go for the extra power. In my experience, go for the 1400W. I found my T5 (850W) on the Leigh didn't have anything like enough power for hardwood (beech). I bought the Bosch twin set (1400W) and it munches easily on oak, beech etc. I suspect you would end up working a 1000W machine very hard on some hardwood jobs.

The 'mid-range' power routers although still fairly weighty (3 -4 kg on average?), are still easy enough to work with on the Leigh jig.

cheers,

ike

I use an Elu MOF177e on mine thats the same as a trend T10/11, DW625 and it has plenty of power.

If you are buying new then get an 8mm collet and 8mm bits as the larger 1/4" shank cutters can chatter giving an oversize cut.

I was never happy with the big Triton on the Leigh, even with the VRS

Whenever I've seen them demo the leigh at the shows they always seem to use a Festool but I can recall whether it was the small or large(meduim) one. I have a T5 (too under powered) and a T11(too heavy) so I was wanting something in between. So I don't need to go for extra power if I don't need it in this instance. Lighter would be preferable but not if its not powerful enough.

Was that due to weight Wizer?

weight and sheer bulk. It just didn't feel nice. Although it was manageable.

I use a 1010 router with my 18 inch Leigh Superjig and it is easily powerful enough - I have never had a problem routing dovetails even in beech, oak, walnut, mahogany or teak
