Hi, my neighbour has asked if I can make her a curtain rail (out of wood obviously) that bends at 90 degrees round her room. Can anyone tell me if that's possible with a length of wood (probably oak) that's about an inch thick?

Thanks in advance Tim.

Hi,Froggy

What is the radius of the bend? if its large you can steam it and bend it but if its tight it would be best to laminate it and bend it round a former.

I'd also second the idea of laminating. Steam-bending works better with some timbers more so than others... With a bit of misfortune, the timber can 'move' again shortly after it's been steamed. :? Laminating can carry similar risks. But, with all the glue and less of the stress that a solid length of timber would have, your chances of success are far greater.

Hi Froggy,

The biggest problem you'll find with this job, even if you get a successful bend is that it WILL sag in the corners. You will need to bracket them but the brackets get in the way of the rings so poles in bay windows are only suitable for looking good and are not really practical.
