bench top planer sizes etc

Hi all

at the moment I'm considering getting rid of my planer/thicknesser (EB260). the reasoning behind this is that I've got a small workshop and if I'm working with longish timber (1m or above) I have to move the thing about and its not to easy. Also if I need even more room I have to get the beast of a machine out of the shed by going down a 6 inch step.

So I'm seriously thinking of getting a bench top planer and a bench top thicknesser. The thicknesser will be either the DW one or similar as I may as well get a good one that will last. The planer that sounds the best is the SIP 6" one with cast iron table and fence. Once I get a bigger workshop in years to come I can alway get a good floor mounted planer as a replacement to complement the thicknesser. But at the moment I need to be able to move both the thicknesser and the planer on occasion

Does any one have one of these and could you let me know on the table size and anything else I should consider with this machine.

if you are thinking of smaller material, what about looking at the mafell 160 which is a combination planer thicknesser it's 6x4 inch capacity
and gives a nice finish, it's also easy to move around, and you do not move the top table to thickness.

certainly worth a look.

the Mafell looks interesting but I'm not to sure about the fence as it looks a bit on the fragil side ...... and in all honesty I've not got a clue about the reputation of the firm. I was thinking about getting a good quality thicknesser and a benchtop planer so I'd only have to upgrade one at a later date ............ assuming I eventually get a bigger workshop

but this is interesting if the cash flow changes

trust me mate the mafell range as a whole is top quality, almost on the level with festo, or fein i think. i have found the fence of decent quality, and don't forget that you are not going to be using really large lumps of wood, although i have run 15feet lumps of 4x1 through it with a decent result.

Don't forget about the noise difference :shock:
get yourself some ear defenders.
A couple of years ago when i first started learning i bought a cheap nutool bench planer (the depot is just up the road £70 brand new).After a bit of use , i just could'nt live with the noise and it's been collecting dust ever since.
I'm not trying to put you off at all i just find some tool's too noisey.

I know about the noise ....... I've got a planer thicknesser at the moment. It just that my workshop is too small and I'm not to happy trying to move the 70+kg machine on my own each time I want to clean a piece of wood that over 0.5m

I always use ear defender and or ear plugs ......... making sure I'm not damaging my hearing any more .......... been to lot of heavy metal concerts

I know it may be a silly thought but have you thought about some flaps? :idea:

I am thinking of fitting some small window size flaps into the side of my shed to enable longer pieces of timber to be fed through.

It would be fairly easy to install some additional support if need be.

you can't beat a big pair of flaps :wink:
