Your drills perfectly fine but you either need arms like popeye or a lighter table.
What if you added a counterweight, something like this

The weight of the table wouldn't be an issue then ;)

now we are talking
that also looks a fun project, may even be able to drop the weights inside the column

Steve
Now you're talking more like ! That get over the wire rope or sash cord having to be to one side of the column.

It's the column on your drill the same diameter as another drill that already has a rack and pinion lift? If so could you just get a table and lift as spares from the other manufacturer? You'd just then need a collar for the rack to slide around the column in if you wanted to be able to move the table out of the way.

nice thought but i bet a pain trying to get the spares

I was going to say "pulley+counterweight," too!

You can either balance it beautifully, or err on the side of a bit of weight or lift.

I'd do the "cord" with the stainless wire rope used on dinghies (the shrouds and other stays) - go to a chandler and ask if they make Telurit splices (for the loops, and use "thimbles" the bits of metal for the end loops) - much stronger than anything made of terylene, etc. If they have braided, it's more flexible. You only need it quite thin so it should also be pretty flexible. they might even have suitable pulleys, but I bet there'll be something on eBay cheaply (chandlers usually aren't very cheap in my experience).

i have some steel cable and thimbles about 4mm i think
i could probably just pour some lead in a pipe to make the weights ( i use to make fishing perks)
pulleys are cheap as
i could put a pair on the roof joists so i can get the weight to drop back into column to keep things tidy
