Bathroom renovation...

I'm in the process of renovating our bathroom, and after ripping out 2 layers of tiles and the plasterboard where the shower was I found this stud which has diamond shaped mesh with mortar over it. Is it, as i think, a bodge or is there a genuine reason someone would do this??? Anyone got any ideas???

Thats plaster angle bead, looks like the bloke has reused a piece of stud from a corner & left the plaster on it
