Hi,

Old helmet I didn't want some one to use it after me.

Pete

Hi,

I have cut the straps of in the past but this was more fun!

Do you do that because it's unsafe in some way? Have you dropped it?

Bike helmets have a 4 year (?) life time, after that they need to be thrown away as the plastic starts to degrade .

I have also seen someone take a cold chisel and a lump hammer to one to render it unusable.

Lump hammer and chisel - reckon that would do it!!!

Pete - are you going to do anything with it now? Mount it on a presentation board? Or makie it look like someone's crashed through your wall??

He had to give it a fair bit of force with the hammer to make the polycarbonate crack. Just goes to show how tough modern bike helmets are.

Hi,

That helmet is made from "Super complex Laminate" its a mix of glass fibre and kevlar a hammer and chisel won't do much damage. And I had sparks off the blade when I was cutting it

It was about 15 years old it had been kicking around the house un-used for quite some time so I decided to get rid of it, but its still in the garage at the moment!

They ought to last forever, as long as they haven't been involved in an 'incident'. But then the manufacturers wouldn't sell many would they? You shouldn't believe absolutely everything you read.

John

Hi,

They do get a bit tired, I wash the in side out a couple of times a year but things like straps get frayed so its best to get a new one, even if they are £550 for the top Arai one (I got last years model for £375)

Pete

Well, as long as it's not just for the sake of fashion, or to 'go wth the new bike!' Like my son, who tells me he never has enough money for minor things like tyres, brake pads etc!

I accept Pete, helmets get tired, but even an old 'past it' model is gonna be better than none.

The price of helmets (and all the other anciliaries) is what puts me off getting a Gold Wing, or similar. 8)

That and knowing I'd never lift it if it fell off its stand!

Regards
John :)

Hi,

Any thing that puts you off getting a goldwing can't be that bad  :D
Pete

They're easy to get off the stand and even amazingly easy to get back up when you drop them. That not withstanding you still don't want a goldwing - it's not a bike, it's a bus on 2 wheels.

A friend of mine had one. One day he arrived at work after a 40 mile ride in hissing rain. Just the top of his helmet had gotten wet. So I believe you about 'the bus'!
