Bandsaw - Burgess BBS2 - need help finding spares

Right, this bandsaw has been sat in my workshop long enough. I've either got to fix it or get rid.

It needs a blade (56 1/2) and a blade guide.

Any ideas if other bandsaw blade guides would fit? for instance, Clarke do a bandsaw that looks the same?

Here is mine...

as you can see in the last picture, the guide is missing. I mean, is it really worth bothering with anyway? plastic pulley wheels? so here's my options...

1. Locate a similar bandsaw and salvage a blade guide.
2. Wang it in the dustbin and buy a better bandsaw.
3. Sell it on Ebay for spares.

I don't know what sort of performance you expect from this saw but apart from very light duty odds and ends, I think you will be disappointed. I think you said before that you got it free but that is around what it is worth in my book.

I have a similar Rexon one bought years ago when I did not know better and that will be going soon bt method 2 or 3.

Sorry to be negative, maybe someone will prove me wrong!

Hi Lee,

I've got a very similar machine, mines badged Burges. The blades are easy enough to get. All the usual suspects, but if you have one nearby Machine Mart sell them. I'm at work at the moment so don't have access to any references but if you look through the catalogue/web and find the Clarke machine that looks the same the blades are interchangeable. So too are the spares I believe.

I think I have a spare blade guide knocking around from a scrapper which I kept just in case. If you are interested PM me and I'm sure we can sort something out (my biggest problem as Bob will attest is finding woodworking stuff under all my engineering kit)

As regards whether they are any good it really depends what you want to use it for. Carefully set up with a new blade and slow cuts I've cut 13 3/4" stair treads to length (I overlayed an existing staircase so had to scribe each one). Things like re-sawing I would say are out unless your wood is very thin. Still I'd say it was worth a little more than you paid for it.

I'd like to say a word in favour of this machine.
With mine, bought for slightly less than thirty quid, I have tapered 3" square Sapele legs on four sides over a 30" length, cut 2mm slices from 2" Sycamore over 650mm and cut 4" square Central American Mahogany in half along a 900mm length. Those are the most tricky things amongst many others. As has been said it is a light duty machine, but it is by no means a load of cr*p.

Whether your machine is worth refurbishing is down to your expected usage and your budget of course.

thanks guys for your help/comments, I really can manage without a bandsaw but I got this one for next-to-nowt so I'd like to at least try to get it functioning, just for small jobs. I think I know it's limitations. lol

I have that exact model, and got a new blade from Screwfix (56.5").

It may be just mine, but I've had issues getting the blade tight enough. At the moment, the blade seems to keep following the grain of the wood.

Would a new/stronger spring on the tensioning bolt remedy this? If so, can anyone suggest a suitable replacement? I tried fitting a 56" blade, but couldn't get it on.

Many thanks to SammieQ for posting me the upper guide for FREE. I went to screwfix and got a blade for it (£7) and she's up and running. Took me about 30 minutes to set it up mind but it seems to cut through 12mm MDF perfectly now, which is all i really need it for.
