I've been in dialogue with Axy for a while over the new Evolution 114mm chuck for my 20 year old Woodfast. It's a beautiful lathe made in Australia and I wanted to beef up the chuck for heavier work. They do a thread which is designed for the Woodfast (which is M33/3.5) but I wanted a bog standard threading on the chuck so it's future proof if I change to a different lathe in the future (still M33/3.5).
The critical dimensions relate to how long the spindle nose and register are when combined. I had ordered the Woodfast specific threaded chuck rather than compromise safety but that would have essentially tied the chuck to that lathe so I was discussing it with Simon, who runs the Basingstoke store and he said, "why don't you borrow the bog standard (T38) and try it on your spindle to see if it threads safely and snugs up past the register against the nut" So I did....and it does....so I bought it.
Now that's a near £200 chuck he's "lending" me and I had to suggest to him I would leave my credit card with him as collateral as he would have let me out the shop on trust alone. Of course he has my details on their database as I'm a regular customer but nevertheless, I thought that was pretty dam decent of the man and reflects the attitude of the company.
Thanks Simon and Axy for the service, it's appreciated.
