Fed up with all the annoying animated avatars I turned off all avatars in user profile. Reading the board is much nicer now without those irritating things. Why do folk think they need to use them?

I've never quite seen the need for any avatars anyway.
But that's probably because I date to a time before they were invented - BBS and usenet

Now if I remember correctly both those things use electricity
It must be a day for me to remember things from long ago.
One day in primary school a girl who I liked was really excited because they had just had electricity installed in her home. It was coming up to Christmas and after school I agreed to go with her to her home to see the new electric light. When we got to her little stone cottage down in the valley it was already quite gloomy. She unwound the string that connected the door handle to a nail in the door post and opened the door which led into the one downstairs room. It was pitch black in here. With a practiced sure footedness she walked into the middle of the room and picked up a box of matches and lit the candle that was on the kitchen table. With this in hand she returned to me to hold the candle close to illuminate the light switch on the wall by the door and switched on the light. We marvelled at this, and worked the switch a time or two. I said my good byes and left for home. I had grown up with both electricity and the modern marvels of hot water and inside bathroom. I did not have the heart to tell her it would have been simpler to just use the light switch by the door and forget about the candles. I was sure she would figure that out for herself. I wondered also how long would it be before she would have water on tap, as she had to go to a well that was about 10-150 yards away lower in the valley. to get to it meant going down steps for about 8 feet to a big steel door. behind the door was the water which was an underground stream. I had explored tunnels of this stream for about two miles as it was fed from disused tin mines and the tunnels were covered in malachite, white arsenic and the odd lithium crystal.
