Hi bunglebin.... why do you say Ash is expensive for you....there is lads out there at moment . Being felled all round the country. I use ash with no problem...
Look out for tree surgeons and ask them for some...

Have found that if I need any wood then it has to be bought.
I live in Devon so plenty of wood around but you need £ to buy.
Can pick up bits of of wood that’s fallen of trees when out walking. But can’t walk far nowadays anyway
I have only ever had off cuts of oak or sepliea given. To tough to workwith

Could you phone the local council tree blokes....they may even drop it off for you...explain what you want and need it for...usually quite helpful...it’s a shame you a tad distant.... I move ash Logs twice a week...even split not quarters...I volunteer at Arnos vale cemetery clearing the ash die back.
Use it for turning myself ....gt the choice of it.

Hi Bunglebin as said by Tanglefoot ( you two should get together with names like that ), it's a shame you're so far away as I could have helped with both practical advice and wood. You don't have to get faultless finish straight from the tool though you will if you practice enough however the better it is the finer grade of abrasive, less dust and work and a better result.
With regards to suitable turning wood, don't discount seasoned hardwood logs for the fire, ask around any cabinet makers/joinery shops on local industrial estates for offcuts, discarded furniture, chair and table legs are worthwhile, skips but ask permission, hardwood pallets the list is endless. Put the word around your friends and neighbours and maybe facebook market place and you might find you get more offers than you can cope with.

I did that a few years ago. A five day course! But not had much luck since then. Will keep practising...had lots of tips and good advice on here.

Near the end of my tether as I have been trying to turn wood for a few years now. But had some good advice on here..so will keep going. Wife’s been waiting for over 5 years now for 4 wood egg cups!

The egg cups are oak and the eggs Ash and Plane tree all rescued from tree surgeons . If the hollowing is your problem, I find making a start by boring the middle out with a forstner bit makes it less stressful.

I found Keith Rowley’s book, Woodturning: A Foundation Course really helpful. You can get the book with a DVD.
I did go to Axminster’s Skill Centre for a introduction course too - they were brilliant and very helpful, but I still read and re-read Rowley’s book, especially so if I’m contemplating trying something new or that I haven’t practised for a while.

Hi bunglebin, im devon too ( south hams ) and as said above, if you phone a local tree surgeon, they will happily give or sell ( probably just give ) you some short logs that you can store and dry out ( paint sealer on the ends as soon as you get them, theres pentacryl and others, or just pva if you dont want to buy anything )

I cant comment on the woodturning issue, its been about 25 years since i last turned anything!! I actually bought a lathe a few years back and still havent used it
I did however buy the above book from ebay to refresh my memory..... but i havent had time to read it yet

I might have cracked it with skew chisel and bead:
basically you are either planing a parallel sided cylinder with toe or heel OUT,
OR you are turning a curve with heel or toe IN.
It's either/or - there's no transition from one to the other - that's where you get the dig ins if you try it.
So I'm in control at least, but still some way to go with the skew. No prob with the others and a dab hand with sandpaper.
