If I'm after some strips of Ash (25 of 5x20x2600mm), would I have any problems using a square-edged Ash skirting board (170x20x3000mm) to cut up?

Ta, Perce.

I bet it is an expensive way to buy your ash, but yes, you could do it. Don't forget that each 5mm strip is going to cost you maybe 10 or 12mm on width. 5mm for the finished strip, 3.2mm for the sawcut (kerf) plus a few mm for cleaning up on each side. If you have a really good blade, you might find that the surface finish is good enough without planing, it depends what you are going to do with it, I guess.

Like Steve said but if you use a bandsaw not a table saw you will waste a lot less as sawdust. The strips might not be quite as consistent though.

Less waste in sawdust, but probably more waste in cleaning up, wouldn't you say, Andy?
Six of one and half-a-dozen of the other, I reckon.

Indeed!

And cleaning up thin fiddly strips is not easy. From what people have said on here, they are too thin to go through a thicknesser. You could hand plane them, in tension, if you nailed down one end, but getting consistent thickness would be interesting, especially over 2.4m.

So best to plane each fresh edge of the plank and work with the sawn surface at the other side.

Doesn't anyone sell it as edging strip? It might be better value overall.

Agreed about difficult putting through a thicknesser.
One way round this that I've used successfully in the past is to fix a piece of 18mm MDF to the bed of my thicknesser (Hammer A3 26) with d/s tape and then pass them through on that. I've successfully managed 2mm strips at 2400 long with almost perfect consistency.

I couldn't find edging strips, but I guess I should keep on looking. I want to glue the strips together in a bent form, so anything less than smooth is going to be a problem, and tidy up long strips is going to be a pain.
Thanks, everyone.

The most economical way to cut this size would be to shoot, or plane both edges of you're board, and cut 1 off from each side, allowing just enough for cleaning up, say 1/2 a mil, if you don't have a clean cutting blade.
Then shoot both edges again, cut off, etc safer and more economical.

Here's an off the wall suggestion that might help.

I recently picked up a discarded wooden blind, because it was made of wood and looked useful. It is a stack of strips, about 2.5mm thick and 50mm wide. There are holes for strings, but in this case about 600mm clear between them. The wood is very straight, pale and clear. It might be beech but is probably something else I don't recognise.

It looks ideal to use for laminating. Some of these blinds are so cheap to buy, from places such as Ikea, that they could be an affordable source for a small quantity.

That's a good route to go down, it's one the pros use.

I've not used original marquetry, but have uses Crispin's and would certainly use them again. Just make sure that when you phone them you know EXACTLY what you want.

I'd like some ash veneer please.
Stop wasting my time.

Conversation B
I'd like some ash veneer please. Quarter-sawn, min 200mm wide, min 2.4m long, 16 consecutive leaves.
Certainly, sir, no problem, I'll sort it for you at once.

Interesting. Constructional veneer, huh?

Thanks. I live in fear of the 'Do you want woofers with that?' conversation.

Sorry to add to an old thread - but I have exactly the same requirements.

Sir Percy did you source your ash strips in the end - or did you use something else?

Guessing your project was a fliptail like mine - how did the build go and the project turn out?
