Hi Guys

Started this yesterday and finished it off this afternoon. The intention was to have a completely round bowl with a round bottom. It turned out a bit lumpy.

Wodya reckon?

that grains very wide for sycamore Tom- more like ash

the bowls good but the curve could be better- or is it the picture?

I like the concept of this one a lot Tom ...
It does appear to be a tad 'un-sycamore-esque' ... it actually 'looks' like Douglas Fir ! but you'd know if it was that featherlight stuff.. and its a right pig to turn  8)

If I could maybe ( somewhat brass-neckedly ) pick a tiny fault, its that the curve of the outside doesn't just quite look as though it flows uniformly, do you know what I mean ? .. maybe thats what you mean by 'lumpy' !...

Its still a damn fine bowl though... and those points may just be the photo, as opposed to the real deal...

I like it, it looks good ! 8) :D

Thanks guys

You're right, it's Ash. When I was turning it, it was exactly like sycamore, that bananary colour. But I rough turned it 6 months ago from what I thought was Ash. I gowt confuzzled.

George, the curve has a couple of lumps, one about a third from the top and one about a third from the bottom. I got inpatient with trying to refine it.

The bottom is perfectly as planned, it wobbles but it doesn't fall down ;)

Looks alright to me. Nice proportions, elegant shape. As good as anything you will see in the fancy shops down the Kings Road.

Mark, thaks for taking the time to reply.

JT, there's a hole in this one, I didn't photograph it tho. ;) Just a tiny knot that I filled with CA before sanding.

That's a good one Tom, shouldn't get too fixated on the small curve deviations, most non turner observers will not detect it, especially as it only shows in profile which is rarely the the viewed orientation.

Anyway it will probably move around to suit itself over time

The important thing is to get a quantity of reasonable items of the lathe so that you get more comfortable with it and your own techniques, IMO worrying about finite form etc. can sit on the sidelines for a while until you have filled all the relatives and friends needs for useable items.

Thanks Chas. These last 2 bowls that have come off the lathe have really lifted my confidence. Before this I was going through the bottom or side of nearly everything and if not then I was getting vast amounts of tearout. Both of these bowls had minimal sanding and are of even thickness throughout.

Nice one Tom.

I think Chas is right, any non-turner would probably never notice the "Lumps". What size is it ?
