Made a sample artbox and easel as per pictures below, however it is a mark 1 and the next box I intend to have wooden hinges and a less conspicuous carrying handle, got in mind a simple box latch also to be made with timber.

That's very nice, DW, I like it a lot. :)

What "hardware" is that you've used to keep the thing near vertical?

Yeah, I cut the stays on the router table, it was a plastic insert, with ali. skin, which I had purchased to use as a table saw insert but was warned off because of the risk of material deflection.

Mark 2 is now well underway but I keep making modifications along the way, (a building site managers nightmare) I enlarged box, then decided to add a rear compartment to store art pads, and then added another rear compartment to store sketch pads, and then decided to make my own carrying handle.
I had trouble with the hinges so removed and then resited and everything fitted nicely, the next day the lid position had changed again, I think the timber is moving or something.

However although the handle is not yet glued to brackets I tried a handhold and the box balances nicely.
So some pictures along the way.

I can't imagine any artist being less than delighted to own a Devonwoody box-easel :) .

I've got a spare which a club member of our art group might like.

Another modification, a perspex sheet as been added and it is going to evolve into a brush holder.

Another mod. the paint compartments have been altered so that a palette sits tightly in the box.

The backside which hold watercolour paper pads looks like it might be a winner.
