Hi All

anyone know where i can buy a larger quantity of araldite rather than the small tubes it's normally in , reason being I'm going to make at least ten upvc blast-gates for my workshop dust extraction system and it will require a bigger quantities that's normally got from tubes.hc

Hi Oryxdesign

That will do nicely , I have to go to exeter shortly and drive right pass axminster so I'll pop in an get some thank you .hc

hi rob

who meeeee :-$ , well maybe a planer or two & a nice new saw bench, a band saw couple of lathes think I better stop there or wake up oh no i am awake , darn its just a dream again :(  .hc

If its plastic blast gates on to plastic ducting then araldite is the wrong stuff to use to be honest. Plumbers plastic weld is a much better option, is cheaper and goes a long way. I bought one small tube from B&Q when I did my system and I've probably used 20% of it to do the whole thing. It sets within 10 seconds and gives an air tight seal. Its not usually on the shelves at B&Q as its classes as a controlled solvent but you ask for it at the till and they just give you some from under the counter.

The trouble with that solvent weld stuff is that it makes a permanent joint. If you thoroughly cleaned the surfaces to make them grease free and then put a couple of turns of duct tape round the joint, I reckon that would also seal it. You'd also then be able to take the thing apart if you needed to modify the system at any time in the future - Rob

That's true but I've found that the tape degrades afer a few months. The clear stuff does at least. Grey and black duct tape while they do the job it all looks a bit DIY. I have a combination of both. The blast gates and risers up into the eves are all done with pipe weld. The horizontal parts which you don't see are taped. If I move house I can disasemble the system to take it with me. While the horizontal lengths may change the vertical pipes to the gate should not so the pipe weld isn't a problem. That's the plan at least.

Aah .. be a bit careful though .. not all pumbing plastic is the same stuff, and solvent weld cements are for specific plastics, and don't work too well on others..

Plumbing plastics include
uPVC
cPVC
ABS
PVDF
SYGEF
HDPE
MDPE
Polyorc

etc etc ...

Generally, your 11/2" / 11/4" / 2" 'Domestic' waste pipes are ABS, and the 4" Stuff is uPVC

Some require to be degreased with thinners before cementing ( Polyorc for example )... its not all just 'plastic', there's a wee bit more science behind it, ( isn't there always !  )

Araldite may indeed not be the most ideal.. to be honest, I've not used a two-pack adhesive on upvc, so it may or may not work well.
If you ask in the plumbers merchants for upvc solvent weld cement, that will be the ideal stuff
