Just joined-what a great site!! at last I can ask all those questions the mag/books can't answer(yes -I'm an amateur) and maybe give some of the benefits of my experience, err mistakes.

I have almost finished 2 bedside cabinets in solid oak (I thought economies of scale would make 2 as easy to make as 1-nope!! does n't feel like it anyway).

Do I need to apply sanding sealer before waxing with clear wax. Don't mind doing it just need to know it's worthwhile. Also any other tips in this area of finishing.

I have discovered that finishes on my projects can make or break them so I am going to put more effort into this instead of applying clear acrylic varnish to everything that I give birth to -kids also get splashed in it from time to time. :D

Hi Danmac,

Welcome to the forum.:D

I have used finishing oil on oak, without sanding sealer with good results.
If you look here there is a how to on using wax on oak that Charley posted.

Thanks very much for the welcome & prompt reply. Never tried finishing oil before so will carry out a sample test.
I was thinking of using danish oil but used it previously on a maple table I had made and it has yellowed really badly over the years (or maybe it's supposed to and I am missing the point -Patina etc..). I just don't like the look of yellow maple.

Will do samples of wax and finishing oil.

Thanks again.
:D :D

Welcome Danmac. After loads of questions here I have used Patina on an oak table and so far it has been pretty much bullet-proof. Easy to apply - I will definitely be using it again. No problems with water stains etc with mugs of tea or wet wine glasses.

Looks like 3 samples now to include Patina. Any excuse to buy woodworking stuff!!

Thanks Roger

Dan
