Sick of sharpening debates and thread, or want in the action more that what's already available lets see if we can encourage ukw to have a sharpening forum, that will cover all aspects of this art.
I'll post the voting thread in general chat
Thanks
TT

I don't understand. If people are sick of the sharpening threads the answer is incredibly simple: don't read them! No one is holding a gun to your head. There are plenty of other topics to read throughout the forum.
I have a sneaking suspicion that some people complain about them whilst secretly being fascinated with the subject! They must be. Why on earth would you read through all the sharpening threads/posts if you disliked them so much.

SAS who dares to sharpen wins, but on a more sombre note I do find the arguments that breakout over sharpening a distraction and most possibly a turn off for any newbies who needs advice. I know from experience that it is a skill that needs refining and with all the kit and conflicting advice out there, it can be overwhelming. Sorry I may not vote for another forum but would try to support it if it were to come to fruition.
Cheers Peter

I am interested to read the posts on sharpening in the hope of improving my own system but, and I imagine this applies to quite a few members, I find it pointless to read the bitter wrangle between some of the contributors. Unfortunately I don't think a separate forum would work because those like myself interested in sharpening methods will still click on it in the hope of reading worthwhile comments.

Unfortunately that gives me "Whoops, page not found".

Sorry - I meant https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/sharpening-honing-suggestion-t69580.html to show that the suggestion of a separate forum has been offered before but did not gather any support.

Discussion of sharpening is an essential topic. There is no need to sideline it, nor is it possible. I am interested in how to sharpen and have learned plenty on here.

But I am not interested in reading personal insults between posters, or arguments against a fantasy opinion not actually expressed by anyone.

I suggest that we should all make an early new year's resolution to remember rule 2 which includes this:

"We intend to maintain a friendly forum where members respect each other regardless of skill level, opinions, or personal feelings. That means no name calling, sneering, impugning a person's integrity, or openly and purposely attempting to damage a person's reputation online. The Internet is a funny place; it's easy to type out a comment, click ‘Post’ then sit back and let the fur fly. There are plenty of other places on the Internet where you can do this, but it won't be tolerated here. Members deemed to be guilty of such action by the moderator team will have their accounts de-activated without notice."

Well said, or re-said. I still think a sharpening forum on its own is a good idea. Possibly need a very active moderator though, policing stupidity, insult and hurt.

The thing that strikes me , is that no matter what method you think is best, all these methods work, its purely subjective, what you prefer.......try them and see what you like. There is no definitive answer here...............

Agree.
There's stuff about MDF (and other rubbish  ) which doesn't interest me one bit but I'm not calling on anybody to stop it. I don't read it if I don't want to.

So you want an MDF forum? Jolly good suggestion. I'll get on it straight away.

Maybe then instead of a sharpening forum we have a range of sticky threads at the top of the page 1 for each "style" of sharpening. These should be locked so no comments can be added, just to make sure we don't put people off. I also think they should be written by members like Jacob (if your up for it Jacob?). I for one have found tons of useful information about sharpening on here it just takes a while to sift through the "debate" before you find the pearls of wisdom. Also new members should be directed to said sticky threads to try and prevent future debates on the subject.

Just my 2p worth

Matt

Thanks for that but it's a moving target - not written in stone you might say.
FWIW what I'd say currently would be "oil stone, head down, brain off, little and often"

Two ideas for them who don't like sharpening threads:

- Don't read them.
- Don't take everything so serious. When you see some opponents clash, laugh out hard and continue with the rest of your life.
