Firm plastic (like tupperware, not completely hard), each with a small hole that goes roughly 50% through.

Should I be capping garden canes, modelling DNA, or what??? They were with my Dad's tools.

Beads to make an abacus or something..

See original post "each with a small hole that goes roughly 50% through". I am not sure they would slide along the abacus bar like that.

I have seen similar large red ones on brass-encased thermometers used for taking the temperature of concrete but that is unlikely to be correct.
 
Beads I think. If they are hard likely acrylic (can also get soft silicone as well), half hole type. You can do all sorts with them, bracelets, keyrings etc , apparently......
