As the topic suggests. For some reason, the transaction goes all the way through to the Amex Safekey/WorldPay screen but then it says 'Please use a different card'. Amex say that the merchants' systems hasn't even tried to establish a payment.

Is this a straightforward credit card transaction or is it linked to a PayPal account? This can cause issues. Also is the card issued from outside the UK? Has it worked with them before? I had issues a few years ago with AMEX which was forced onto me by a previous employer that I refused to use it as it kept getting blocked for "security reasons" and would have left me stranded if I didn't have a backup.

Gosh that brings back uncomortable memories!

I, too, used to travel with my own, private Mastercard, just in case.

I was generally fine in the USA, but elsewhere Amex was pot luck. France was particularly awkward, IIRC.

And then, to cap it all off, a year after leaving the company concerned, I got a large Amex bill that was nothing to do with me at all, as I'd handed my company Amex card back on the day I left.

This one is a straightforward credit card transaction. The card is UK issued and I've not used this card (or any other, TBH) with Toolstation before.

Do Toolstation accept Amex? Many places don't, as Amex take a larger percentage than Mastercard or Visa. The OH has an Amex card, and regularly has to revert to an alternate.

We have just moved across to AMEX with work. I am hoping that it will be widely accepted because I am about to go to China and Malaysia. I do not have high expectations, outside of the western hotels.

Yes they do. The companies that don't won't accept the Amex card at the start of the transaction.

It's a long time since I had it, but I used it in Singapore and Australia - big hotels though, in the main.

Problem identified.

It's those incompetent bumbling numpties at American Express and their even more incompetent systems....and my advice to Marcros is to make damn sure that you have another credit card(s) for when Amex screw your account up by sending you an unwanted and unasked for replacement card and invalidating your (as far as you are concerned perfectly functional card) without bothering to tell you.

The Toolstation problem was but one example. Mar 31st..tried to buy a MacBook for SWMBO online from John Lewis. Payment declined. Amex swore blind that they'd not received any attempt from John Lewis.

PayPal..attempted to pay for something using my Amex card that I had used with them perfectly OK with previous transactions. Denied. Ring Amex to ask why and get told that PayPal are sending them the old card details. Tried again. Deleted the card on PayPal then tried to re-instate it. 'Card not accepted'. Amex say PayPal are sending the old card data. PayPal telling me that they send what I type in. Piggy-in-the-middle time.

Now bear in mind that before you can talk to an Amex agent, you have to enter in your 15 digit card number. At no point in this process do the c**p Amex systems alert either you or the agent to the fact that the card number you just entered is no longer valid.

And so finally yesterday...went into my Shell garage to fill up. Card declined. Speak to Amex..."you're using an old card". Me "No, I'm not..it's the card you last sent to me". "OK...we'll look into it and call you back". Thinks.......yesterday all their online and agent systems were down for most of the day..(Marcros did I remember to recommend that you took an alternative card......) and so it was logical to assume that my card was refused for the same reason.

So finally this morning...go to use my Amex card...payment declined and this time Amex tell me that the card has been invalidated as they sent me a new card. Que? I never asked for one. I've been using this existing card for the last week or so and this is after the time that they told me they had sent a new card and invalidated the 'to them' old card.

We shall see. Now how many Avios do I want in compensation? I reckon 50,000 ought to cover it.
